In this very strange and beautiful picture we see the city of New York as it appears when photographed through multiplying prisms, or reflected in the backs of spoons, polished hub caps, spherical and parabolic mirrors. We still recognize houses, people, shop fronts, taxicabs, but recognize them as elements in one of those living geometries which are so characteristic of the visionary experience. The invention of this new cinematographic art seems to presage (thank heaven!) the supersession and early demise of non-representational painting. It used to be said by the non-representationalists that colored photography had reduced the old-fashioned portrait and the old-fashioned landscape to the rank of otiose absurdities. This, of course, is completely untrue. Colored photography merely records and preserves, in an easily reproducible form, the raw materials with which portraitists and landscape painters work. Used as Mr. Thompson has used it, colored cinematography does much more than merely record and preserve the raw materials of non-representational art; it actually turns out the finished product. Looking at NY, NY, I was amazed to see that virtually every pictorial device invented by the old masters of non-representational art and reproduced ad nauseam by the academicians and mannerists of the school, for the last forty years or more, makes its appearance, alive, glowing, intensely significant, in the sequences of Mr. Thompson’s film."

One of my primary complaints with higher education is that they tend to prepare students for jobs of the past. The way a Midwesterner would phrase it, “they are constantly shooting behind the duck.”
Similarly, whenever a column is written about the best paying jobs of the future, jobs like civil engineers, registered nurses, and computer system analysts, they are all jobs that currently exist today.
Yes, many of these jobs will still exist in the future, but every one of them will morph and change as technology and communication systems make their impact.
As an example, technology research firm IDC predicts the amount of data businesses will have access to will grow 50-fold over the next decade. As data becomes cheaper, faster, and more pervasive, the nature of our work begins to change as well.
The first wave of baby boomers has now turned 65. As this generation greys, their needs will change. Their growing numbers and increasing medical needs will require a different kind of health care professionals to take care of them.
As a rule of thumb, 60% of the jobs 10 years from now haven’t been invented yet. With that in mind, I’ve decided to pull together a list of 55 jobs that will be in high demand in the future."

À mesma conclusão chegarão aqueles cuja filosofia é excessivamente "espiritual". Deus, insistem, é um espírito e deve ser venerado em espírito. Como tal, uma experiência quimicamente condicionada não pode ser uma experiência do divino. Mas, de uma form ou de outra, todas as nossas experiências são quimicamente condicionadas, e se imaginamos que algumas delas são puramente "espirituais", puramente "intelectuais", puramente "estéticas", é somente porque nunca nos demos ao trabalho de investigar o nosso ambiente químico interno no momento da respectiva ocorrência. Além disso os registos históricos dizem-nos que a maior parte dos contemplativos se esforçava de modo sistemático para modificar a sua própria química corporal, com vista a criar as condições internas favoráveis à introvisão espiritual. Qando não estavam a jejuar deliberadamente reduzindo a sua própria taxa de açúcares no sangue e promovendo as avitaminoses, ou a flagelar-se até se inebriarem com histamina, adrenalina e proteínas decompostas, estavam a cultivar a insónia e a orar durante longos períodos em posturas desconfortáveis, de maneira a criarem os sintomas psicofíscos do stress. Nos intervalos cantavam salmos intermináveis, o que lhes aumentava a quantidade de dióxido de carbono nos pulmões e na corrente sanguínea, ou, caso fossem orientais, executavam exercícios respiratórios para alcançar o mesmo fito. As I grow, I have learnt that privacy is important, and there is only so much time that we all have on this earth and only so many people that we can spend it with. I want someone who admits that they really like my company rather than playing games, alas, modern dating, games have become the norm, and I don't have time or patience to play along. As I grow, I have learnt, that I am complete by myself, and I don't need anyone to define my existence, but you can make me so much better. I want to be stronger with you, and grow with you, together, and individually. To tell you the truth - no, I don't need you - but I really want you. And all of this, that you realize that we are two very different people, and that we are just starting to know each other, and that we might not work out, and everything else about our relationship, makes me think that this might actually work, that we've got a pretty good shot."

How does IQ relate to personality?

"It's just that IQ is primarily measured with ability tests, whereas personality tests are primarily measured with questionnaires. But this is more a reflection of a lack of ingenuity on the part of psychologists than a real difference in domain of human functioning. [...] It's theoretically possible to measure personality traits through ability tests. For instance, agreeableness could be measured through tests of perspective taking, conscientiousness could be measured through tests of self-control, and neuroticism could be measured through measures of emotional self-regulation. Viewing IQ as a personality trait is helpful because it puts IQ in perspective. We can take a birds eye view of all the many fascinating ways we differ from one another in cognitive processing, emotion, and motivation, while seeing where IQ fits into that bigger picture."

Why Models?
Reason #1: To be an intelligent citizen of the world.
Reason #2: They make us better clear thinkers.
Reason #3: To understand and use data.
Reason #4: To decide, strategize and design.

Models are the new lingua franca, they're the language of business, they're the language of politics, they're the knowledge of the non profit world.

Models tie us to a mast of logic, and by doing so, we figure out which ways of thinking, which ideas are useful.

Models are better than we are.

Models are fertile. Once you learn a model for one domain, you can apply it to a whole other bunch of domains. You can also use them to find out who wrote a book.

Models make us humble. They make us see the full dimension of a problem.

Thinkers who use many models, know best. So what is really important, is to have many models.
The 'Foxes', who had lots of models, did much better than the 'hedghogs', who had no models (Philip tetlock). Formal models did better than 'Foxes'. People with lots of 'Formal models' will do even better. So the idea is to use multiple models.

Models make us clearer thinkers. They work through logic. They inductively explore. They allow us to understand the class of outcome [05:42]. They help us to identify logical boundaries [07:26]. models allow us to communicate our ideas and what we know, really simply [08:21].

Steps to build a model:
— Name the parts (people, money, places, preferences, etc)
— Identify relationships (and how things play out)

People use models to:
— Understand patterns
— Predict points [02:07]
— Produce bounds
— Retrodict
— Predict other stuff
— Inform data collection
— Estimate hidden parameters
— Calibrate

How can models help us?
— They can be real time decision aids.
— They can help us with comparative statics.
— They can help us with counter factuals.
— We can use them to identify and rank.
— They can help us with experimental design.
— They can help us design institutions, themselves.
— They can help us choose among policies and institutions.

Scanners

Scanners have a very funny idea about time.
You know when you say you must live in the moment? Scanners can't get out of the moment.
They only live in the present and they feel like their life is going to end by Thursday.
And they don't know how to learn chinese, travel the world and play the violin, by Thursday!
Scanners, actually, are not too busy!
They're just hysterical.
I don't want to do anything second. I want to do everything first.
Because I think there is only NOW, and I'm ready for everything, but it won't fit through the door!
There's a very interesting tool. We all know about it, but scanners forget about it. And it really works!
It's called a calendar.
Your wishes are like a 100 little kids all trying to get through a door at the same time. They can't all get through the door at the same time. But if they line up they can get through the door.
A scanner has to make their own calendar. Because they're hysterical. They are. They're like... They can't think. They know there's now and they don't know there's then.

Are you a multipotentialite?

"Multipotentiality is the state of having many exceptional talents, any one or more of which could make for a great career for that person. Gifted children often (though of course not always) have multipotentiality. Their advanced intellectual abilities and their intense curiosity make them prime candidates for excelling in multiple areas. This can be both a blessing and a curse. On the bright side, they have many realistic options for future careers. But on the downside, some of them will struggle mightily trying to decide which choice to make. Particularly in the last couple years of high school and the first couple years of college, this monumentous decision with so many great possible outcomes can be a source of debilitating stress. The choice is “exhausting and stressful,” as one of my students said this year."
