Can You Eat Yourself Happy?
The foods at the bottom are the ones to concentrate on. This is a lot like the Mediterranean diet, heavy on veggies, with some seafood to add healthy omega-3 oils to your diet.
Along with the pyramid, here are some more tips to grow a healthy set of gut microbes.
• Stop eating sugar. Sugary foods feed pathogenic bacteria. Sugar is added to so many processed foods, it can be hard to escape. So check those labels. Better yet, cook your own food so you know what you're eating.
• Eat high-fiber veggies. These include foods like asparagus, leeks, artichokes, and garlic. The fiber in these foods will pass through your small intestines intact and make it to the colon to feed your healthy microbes. Grains are great if they are whole grains, and you can tolerate them. But refined grains are not much better than sugar.
• Eat fermented foods. This is a great way to add some good bacteria to your diet. Most of these microbes will not stick around in your gut, but they will alter the environment for the better as they pass through. That means you should make this a daily routine. Excellent choices: yogurt, kefir, kombucha, and kraut.
• Try prebiotics. If you can't get enough fiber from veggies, try topping off with prebiotic supplements. These are complex sugars called oligosaccharides (OS) in various flavors like GOS, FOS, XOS, and others. For mood, GOS has shown the best results. Also in this group is resistant starch. You can convert ordinary carbs to resistant starch by cooling them. Thus, cold potato salad is healthier for you than a hot potato.

Molecules Of Emotion
Why do we feel the way we feel? How do our thoughts and emotions affect our health? Are our bodies and minds distinct from each other or do they function together as parts of an interconnected system? In her groundbreaking book Molecules of Emotion, Candace Pert provides startling and decisive answers to these and other challenging questions that scientists and philosophers have pondered for centuries. Her pioneering research on how the chemicals inside our bodies form a dynamic information network, linking mind and body, is not only provocative, it is revolutionary. By establishing the biomolecular basis for our emotions and explaining these new scientific developments in a clear and accessible way, Pert empowers us to understand ourselves, our feelings, and the connection between our minds and our bodies -- body-minds -- in ways we could never possibly have imagined before. Molecules of Emotion is a landmark work, full of insight and wisdom and possessing that rare power to change the way we see the world and ourselves.

meditação e sistema imunitário
"Buddhist traditions claim that meditation decreases psychological distress and promotes well-being (e.g., Dalai Lama and Cutler, 2009). Therefore, we investigated the effects of a 3-month meditation retreat on telomerase activity and two major contributors to the experience of stress."

Cancer and emotions
"It is becoming increasingly clear that stressful life events can affect cancer growth and metastasis by modulating nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. The purpose of this review is to briefly describe the process by which stress may potentiate carcinogenesis and how reducing body stress may prevent cancer growth and progression. The opioid peptide β-endorphin plays a critical role in bringing the stress axis to a state of homeostasis. We have recently shown that enhancement of endogenous levels of β-endorphin in the hypothalamus via β-endorphin neuron transplantation suppresses stress response, promotes immune function, and reduces the incidence of cancer in rat models of prostate and breast cancers. The cancer-preventive effect of β-endorphin is mediated through the suppression of sympathetic neuronal function, which results in increased peripheral natural killer cell and macrophage activities, elevated levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines, and reduced levels of inflammatory cytokines. β-endorphin inhibition of tumor progression also involves alteration in the tumor microenvironment, possibly because of suppression of catecholamine and inflammatory cytokine production, which are known to alter DNA repair, cell-matrix attachments, angiogenic process, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Thus, β-endorphin cell therapy may offer some therapeutic value in cancer prevention."

Stress and the immune system
"In the last twenty years or so, research has begun to support the theory that letting go of suppressed emotions can be beneficial to the physical body. This is especially true of stress, because so many studies have focussed on how that particular emotional state affects the body. One of the landmark stress studies was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1991*. In this study, 420 men and women first took surveys on a variety of factors, including their stress levels. Then, some of the subjects were given a nasal spray that contained saline, while the rest were given a nasal spray that contained the common cold virus (don't worry, they were all told ahead of time that this would be happening, although they did not know which spray they would get). Can you guess what happened? The ones who reported being more stressed initially developed a full-on cold, while the ones who reported being less stressed initially were better able to fight it off. Of all the factors listed in the surveys, stress was the only one that made a significant difference in the outcome. In other words, this study showed that holding on to stress makes you more vulnerable to developing disease.
Since this groundbreaking study, hundreds of other studies have shown that stress is associated not only with the common cold but also with more serious things like heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and cancer. It is still difficult for researchers to prove whether stress by itself can cause cancer, mostly because it would be unethical to make one group purposefully relaxed and then see which developed cancer. However, what researchers know for certain is that stress weakens the immune system, and the immune system plays a key role in detecting and removing cancer cells from the body."

Psilocibina medicada / Cuidados paliativos / Psychedelic psychotherapy
"Over the past two decades, there has been a resurgence of scientific
inquiry into potential therapeutic benefits of psilocybin. Much is new
about psilocybin as a medicine, an entheogen, and a window into human
consciousness. A New Understanding informs us, in a remarkably lively,
balanced, entertaining, engrossing and informative way."
"Psilocybin facilitates a greater likelyhood of achieving a psycho spiritual state of consciousness. A mystical mimetic experience. And the old research literature of the 50's and 60's, very strongly indicated that individuals and psychedelic research studies who experienced a spiritual epiffany during the course of their many hour treatment session, were more likely to have a long term therapeutic outcome."
"Paliative care can be activated at the time the time of diagnosis of a life threatening disease. The existential suffering. The psychospiritual distress people go through when facing advanced disease and potential death."
"What the subjects are looking for is a transformation of the experience of facing death and having a terminal illness or having a cancer diagnosis. They hope and, what we suggest to them might happen, is improvement in their tolerance for pain, an improvement in their ability to think about these really terrifying, deep existential questions of meaning, loss, dispair, hope, regret, guilt, transcendence, life after death. These topics that are so difficult to talk about and they are often avoided."

"In this book, renowned philosopher and scholar of religion Huston Smith, takes a serious look at the use of psychedelic drugs as a means to achieve mystical union with the divine. In a unique blend of direct experience and academic depth, Smith examines this controversial subject and describes the historic and turbulent academic experiments of the sixties in which he was both a subject and an observer. Smith begins by telling the story of his own initiation into the world of psychedelic drugs in the company of Timothy Leary—a meeting arranged by Aldous Huxley—and the profound effect it had on his understanding of reality. In wrestling with the question—Do drugs have religious import?—he draws on history, theology, philosophy, psychology, and anthropology. He tells of fascinating experiments that attempted to shed light on this question, such as the one in which he participated as a guide, where twenty volunteers—mostly seminary students—were given psilocybin before they attended a traditional Good Friday church service. He discusses as well the use of peyote in Native American sacred rituals and the hallucinogenic plant soma in ancient India. Throughout, he does not approach the question of drugs and religion from any fixed standpoint. Instead, he mines his own experiences and his relationships to pioneers in this field to come up with insights on this intriguing subject that are not available in any other book written for the general public."

Because dying matters
[...] I am a man of vehement disposition, with violent enthusiasms, and extreme immoderation in all my passions.
[...] Over the last few days, I have been able to see my life as from a great altitude, as a sort of landscape, and with a deepening sense of the connection of all its parts.
[...] I feel a sudden clear focus and perspective. There is no time for anything inessential.
[...] When people die, they cannot be replaced. They leave holes that cannot be filled, for it is the fate — the genetic and neural fate — of every human being to be a unique individual, to find his own path, to live his own life, to die his own death.
[...] Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege and adventure.

do sistema imunitário
"There is mounting evidence that this might be possible. A whole new field has emerged in the past ten years, known as psychoneuroimmunology, or PNI, beautifully described for the layperson in the book The Healer Within by Dr. Steven Locke of the harvard Medical School, and Douglas Colligan. Simply put, studies in this new field are showing tht our body's many exquisite cellular and molecular defense mechanisms against infection and disease, known collectively as the immune system, do not operate in a vacuum to keep us healthy. As the term psychoneuroimmunology suggests, the immune system is now known to be regulated in parte at least by the nervous system, which integrates all the organ systems of the body so that we can function harmoniously as a unified organism. And of course, the nervous system makes the life of the mind possible. So there appear to be important interconnections, as yet only poorly understood, between the brain and the immune system. This means that science now has at least a plausible working model to explain how our thoughts and emotions and life experiences might, under some circumstances, influence our susceptibility or resistance to disease."
