Explanation is a construct. It has no existence.

"The drive to explain is an epidemic in modern thought and its major carriers are contemporary therapists: every shrink I have ever seen suffers from this malady, and it is addictive and contagious. Explanation is an illusion, a mirage, a construct, a soothing lullaby. Explanation has no existence."
Irvin Yalom, in Creatures of a Day

The Playground / metodologias

"Kant's idea that play is the antithesis of reason, that reason must triumph over imagination and philosophy and science over art, is a continual ghostly presence in Freud. The Kantian hierarchy fit well with Freud's scientific temperament. Science is ideally a discipline of remove, in fact, the scientists are supposed to vanish in the third person objectivity of the observation or experiment. The I/You dialectic may be an object of study, but it's not part of the epistemological drama. When the cure in question is one enacted through a form of dialogue: two people alone together in a room, the remove, what came to be called neutrality, is an insistence that dispassionate reason guide the analyst no matter how messy and wild, no matter what the doings on the tummelplatz become."

Siri Hustvedt: "Freud's Playground: Some Reflections on the Art and Science of Subjectivity and Intersubjectivity"

"Because many therapists have trained in traditions that stress the importance of opaqueness and neutrality, friends willing to reveal themselves to one another may, in this regard, have an advantage over professional therapists. [...] The more you can be truly yourself, can share yourself fully, the deeper and more sustaining the friendship."
Irvin Yalom, in Staring at the Sun

Lost in translation

First, there is the barrier between image and language. Mind thinks in images but, to communicate with another, must transform image into thought and then thought into language. That march, from image to thought to language, is treacherous. Casualties occur: the rich, fleecy texture of image, its extraordinary plasticity and flexibility, its private nostalgic emotional hues — are all lost when image is crammed into language.

To be and not to be

Arnos Vale Cemetery

Facing that void

As palavras de Nietzsche fluíam agora.

— Obrigado, doutor. Breuer. Conversar com o senhor ajudou-me a consolidar essas ideias. Sim, eu deveria abençoar a minha doença.

Hoje, dir-lhe-ei a minha segunda máxima: "
Tudo o que não me mata, fortalece-me." Assim, repito: a minha doença é uma bênção.

Letting go / Quando for grande também quero parecer pequena.

"It's strange, Irv, but you seem to have gotten a lot smaller", diz a paciente para o seu psi ao fim de quatro anos de terapia.

Podeis outorgar-lhes vosso amor,
mas não vossos pensamentos.
Porque eles têm seus próprios pensamentos.
Podeis abrigar seus corpos, mas não suas almas;
Que vosso encurvamento na mão do Arqueiro seja vossa alegria;

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Question: What is the life span of a therapy group on a hospital's psychiatric ward?

Answer: One session.

[..] But in hospital groups there is no stability, no returning to any theme, because the cast of characters changes so rapidly. In my five years on the ward I rarely had the same complement of members for two consecutive meetings, never for three!

[...] But what was the point of pretending that groups could do more than they could? Remember your mantra, I kept reminding myself:
small is beautiful. Small is beautiful — small goals, small successes.
[...] Carol claimed that she had no problems and didn't want to improve her relationships.
[...] Rosa didn't trust anyone: "People always misunderstand me and try to change me."
[...] Dorothy, spittle dripping from her mouth, head deeply bowed to avoid any eye contact, spoke in a despairing whisper and gave me nothing.
[...] "I have no hope of anything good ever happening to me again", Martin said.

[...] Magnolia put forward this agenda: "Ah'd like to learn to listen better in this group. Don't you think dat would be a good thing, Doctah? Mah momma always tol' me it was important to be a good listener."

Good God! It was going to be a long, long session. How was I going to fill the rest of the time?

Momma and the Meaning of Life, Irvin Yalom

The meaning of life?

We are meaning-seeking creatures who must deal with the inconvenience of being hurled into a universe that intrinsically has no meaning. And then to avoid nihilism we must embark on a double task. First, we invent or discover a life-meaning project sturdy enough to support a life. Next, we must contrive to forget our act of invention and persuade ourselves that we have not invented but discovered the life-meaning project — that has an independent "out there" existence.

"She was vain, controlling, intrusive, suspicious, spiteful, highly opinionated, and abysmally ignorant (but intelligent — even I could see that). Never, not once, do I remember sharing a warm moment with her. Never once did I take pride in her or think, I'm so glad she's my momma. She had a poisoness tongue and a spiteful word about everyone — except my father and sister."
Momma and The Meaning of Life, Irvin Yalom

Tanta coisa em tão poucas palavras!

So Marvin and I reached a crucial point, a juncture to which full awareness inevitably leads. It is the time when one stands before the abyss and decides how to face the pitiless existencial facts of life: death, isolation, groundlessness, and meaninglessness. Of course, there are no solutions. One has a choice only of certain stances: to be "resolute", or "engaged", or corageously defiant, or stoically accepting, or to relinquish rationality and, in awe and mystery, place one's trust in the providence of the Divine.

Love's Executioner, de Irvin Yalom

To be resolute and stoic in defying corageously the groundlessness and meaninglessness of existence. Digo eu.

da subjectividade / fenomenologias!

Yet, can therapists or historians or biographers reconstruct a life with any degree of accuracy if the reality of even a single hour cannot be captured? Years ago I conducted an experiment in which a patient and I each wrote our own view of each of our therapy hours. Later when we compared them, it was at times difficult to believe that we described the same hour. Even our views of what was helpful varied. My elegant interpretations? She never ever heard them! Instead she remembered, and treasured, casual, personal, supportive comments I had made.*

At such times one longs for an umpire of reality or some official sharp-imaged snapshot of the hour. How disquieting to realize that reality is illusion, at best a democratization of perception based on participant consensus.

The importance of self revelation

Verdades incontestáveis

Encased in an elaborate illusion of unlimited power and progress, each of us subscribes, at least until one's mid-life crisis, to the belief that existence consists of an eternal, upward spiral of achievement, dependent on will alone.

This conforting illusion may be shattered by some urgent, irreversible experience, often referred to by philosophers as a "boundary experience". Of all possible boundary experiences , none [...] more potently confronts us with finiteness and contingency (and none is more able to effect immediate dramatic personal change) than the imminence of our own death.

The givens of existence

(clicar na imagem para ver melhor)

I have found that four givens are particularly relevant to psychotherapy: the inevitability of death for each of us and for those we love; the freedom to make our lives as we will; our ultimate aloneness; and, finally, the absence of any obvious meaning or sense to life. However grim these givens may seem, they contain the seeds of wisdom and redemption. I hope to demonstrate, in these ten tales of psychotherapy, that it is possible to confront the truths of existence and harness their power in the service of personal change and growth.

Sexo e morte

O poder da sexualidade, "the vital life force", por vezes combate os pensamentos sobre morte. (Irvin Yalom)

Eu cá continuava a alimentar pensamentos estimulantes!
