Bem me parecia.
Diz António Damásio:
[...] The desire of the genes to remain and to be passed on. What would the genes do to create an organism that would be the most effective to pass on themselves? And the answer is that EMOTIONS become very very high with all of these things like reward and punishment mechanisms and drives and motivations because emotions are that sort of automatic intelligence that would guide an organism to do the most conveniente thing for that organism to survive during the time that its genoma (?) would allow it to survive.
So very early on, emotion must have been one of the very first things to develop. So we are really dealing with something that is now part and parcel (?) of our lives but has been here for a long long time.
[...] And then we have to deal with this very old system [...] and then we have to layer on top of it this new thing that we have evolved: cultures and civilizations that will allow us to be more pointed (?) and create the best possible behaviour.
[...] I think that what evolution gave us, very rapidly, was different kinds of processes, that were all of the "emotion" flavour and they made life more possible for a longer period...

Sinto, logo desisto?

Mother
A Life's Journey
C S Lewis, autor do livro, The Lion The With and The Wardrobe, que marcou a minha infância.
Mother was our rock, our fortress, almost a sole architect of our humdrum happiness. So when she died with cancer it was the end of my world. The long corridors became long empty corridors. The empty sunlit rooms became rooms blackened by the heavy drapes that were drawn across the windows. The upstairs indoor silences gave way to the cheerless sounds of weeping and lifeless dialogue. And the attics to be explored in solitude became attics to cry in solitude.
Our rock had sunk into the sea like Atlantis.
Our fortress had crumbled and the laughter had been silenced.
And I was ten years old.

Habits
Caminhante, são teus rastos
o caminho, e nada mais;
caminhante, não há caminho,
faz-se caminho ao andar.
Ao andar faz-se o caminho,
e ao olhar-se para trás
vê-se a senda que jamais
se há-de voltar a pisar.
Caminhante, não há caminho,
somente sulcos no mar.
António Machado
Scientists have tended to think that to have a mind like ours, one must be able to think and calculate and deliberate as we do. In fact, to have a mind like ours, what is needed are habits like ours. Habits and skills are environmental in the sense that they are triggered by environmental conditions and they vanish in the absence of the appropriate environmental setting. We can reject the idea that we are autonomous islands of decision making, acting on the basis of careful scanning and sound judgmente. Our nature is more intimately entangled with our environment than that.

To be or not to be / Sobre a grande ilusão da consciência
Susan Blackmore tenta explicar a grande questão:
"Consciousness flows like a stream"
"Do you believe in free will. do you believe you can control the actions of your body?"
Introspective analysis is like seizing a spinning top to catch its motion, or trying to turn up the gas quickly enough to see how the darkness looks.

The future's not ours to see

It is part of my character to make choices and to have the strength to carry them through.
It is part of my character to make choices and to have the strength to carry them through.
It is part of my character to make choices and to have the strength to carry them through.

Please feel free to feel

Illusion is the first of all pleasures. Já dizia Oscar Wilde
Pois é. A ilusão.
Primeira ratoeira:
A relutância em admitir a complexidade (the reluctance to admit complexity).
Teremos de adoptar uma visão mais complexa sobre o que é o bem-estar (we will have to adopt a more complicated view of what wellbeing is).
A segunda ratoeira:
A confusão entre experiência e memória (confusion between experience and memory):
– Being happy in your life.
– Being happy about your life or with your life.
A terceira ratoeira:
The unfortunate fact that we can't think about any circumstance that affects wellbeing without distorting it's importance (a triste evidência de não sermos capazes de pensar acerca de uma coisa / acontecimento qualquer que afecte o nosso bem-estar sem que isso distorça a sua real importância).
___
There is an "experiencing self" and a "remembering self", and confusing both is part of the mess of the notion of happiness.
O "remembering self" vai contabilizando a vida (keeps score of our life).
___
O que define uma história?
– As mudanças (changes).
– Uns momentos significativos.
– O final (o final é sempre muitíssimo importante).
___
___
We don't choose between experiences, we choose between memories of experiences.
___
The two "selves" bring up to the notion of happiness:
– How happy the person lives versus how happy the person is when he/she thinks about his/her life.
Conclusão:
Happiness is being satisfied with people that we like. It is spending time with people that we like.

Eu quero mais e me abrir
E que essa vida entre assim
Como se fosse o sol
Desvirginando a madrugada
Quero sentir a dor dessa manha
Nascendo, rompendo, rasgando,
E tomando meu corpo e então eu
Chorando, sofrendo, gostando, adorando, gritando
Feito louco, alucinado e criança
Sentindo o meu amor se derramando
Não da mais p'ra segurar
Explode coração

O busílis da questão
Hayek sobre valores morais e altruísmo
There are three levels of beliefs: we have in the first instance our intuitive moral feelings which are adapted to the small person, to person society, where we act for people whom we know and are served by people whom we know.
Then we have a society governed by moral traditions, which unlike what the rationalists believe, are not intelectual discoveries of men who designed them but that are a result of a process which I now prefer to describe as a biological term of "group selection". Those groups who had quite accidentally developed favourable habits such as the tradition of private property and the family who did succeed but who never understood this. So we owe our present extended order of human cooperation very largely to a moral tradition which the intellectual does not approve of because they have never been intellectually designed and it has to compete with a third level of moral beliefs. Those morals which the intellectuals design in the hope that they can better satisfy Man's instincts than the traditional rules do.
And we live in a world where three moral traditions are in constant conflict: the innate ones, the traditional ones and the intellectually designed ones, and ultimately, all our political conflicts of this time can be reduced as affected by a conflict between three moral traditions of a different nature, not only of different content: one being innate and spontaneous, the other traditions we have learned and the third, imagined designs of our intelect. I think you can explain the whole of the social conflicts of the last two hundred years by the conflict of three moral traditions.
...
The altruism is an instinct we've inherited from the small society where we know for whom we work, who we serve. When you pass from this, as I like to call it, concrete society where we are guided by what we see, to the abstract society which far transcends our range of vision it becomes necessary thet we are guided not by the knowledge of the effect of what we do, but through some abstract symbols. Now the only symbol that tells us where we can make the best contribution is profit and, in fact, by persuing profit we are as altruistic as we can possibly be because we extend our concern to people who are beyond our range of personal conception. This is the condition which makes it possible even to produce what I call an extended order. An order which is not determined by our aims, by our knowing what are the most urgent needs, but by impersonal mechanism who by a system of communication puts a label on certain things which are wholly impersonal. Now it's exactly this where the conflict between the traditional moral which is not altruistic, which emphasizes private property and the instinctive moral which is altruistic come in constant conflict. The very tradition from a concrete society where each serves the needs of other people whom he knows to an extended abstract society where most people serve the needs of others whom they do not know, whose existence they are not even aware of was only made possible by the abandonment of the altruism and solidarity as the main guiding factors which, I admit, are still the factors dominating our instincts and what restrains our instincts in this respect is the tradition of private property and the family, the two traditional rules of morals which are in conflict with instinct.

O acaso comanda
Friedrich August Hayek
