"Activism is the rent that you pay, to live in democracy"
Naomi Wolf

1) Invocar uma ameaça interna ou externa;

2) Criação de um Gulag, ou prisões secretas onde se pratica a tortura;

3) Criação de forças policiais especiais, 'mercenários', polícia disfarçada e não identificada como tal;

4) Sistemas de vigilância, câmaras a filmar, espionagem;

5) Molestação de grupos de cidadãos, infiltração de pessoas violentas em grupos de cidadãos pacíficos;

6) Detenções e libertações arbitrárias, trata-se de uma tática de intimidação;

7) 'Rotulagem' de indivíduos que visa a sua consequente perda de emprego e aplicação castigos reais por terem ousado contestar o poder vigente;

8) Controlar a imprensa e desrespeitar jornalistas;

9) Afirmar que dissidência é igual a traição. Começa-se a apelidar as pessoas de terroristas. Afirmar que o protesto e a dissidência equivalem a sabotagem e a ameaças à segurança nacional;

10) Lei marcial.

It's her fault... dizem os moralistas

"The question for "why does she stay" is code for some people, for: "it's her fault for staying", as if victims intentionally choose to fall in love with men who intent upon destroying us."

Barry Komisaruk and Beverly Whipple have a study that shows that if you stimulate different parts of a woman's vaginal walls or cervix or the G spot or the clitoris or the labia, it activates different parts of the brain, that are associated with different emotions and brain functions. [...] It turns out that the autonomic nervous system in women is highly correlated to arousal. More so than in men, so that women really do need to feel safe from 'bad stress', in order for that really important autonomic nervous system response that's so crucial for profound female sexual pleasure to take place. In other words, if there's 'bad stress', your autonomic nervous system won't as easily let your heart rate lift when some one's making love to you, or you won't start to sweat, you won't start to lubricate as much, your vaginal walls won't engorge with blood as much, clitoris labia won't engorge with blood as much. It's literally a direct effect whether you're emotionally stressed out and if you can get turned on or turned on really well.

Wolf suggested in 2003 that the ubiquity of Internet pornography tends to enervate the sexual attraction of men toward typical real women. She writes, "The onslaught of porn is responsible for deadening male libido in relation to real women, and leading men to see fewer and fewer women as 'porn-worthy.' Far from having to fend off porn-crazed young men, young women are worrying that as mere flesh and blood, they can scarcely get, let alone hold, their attention." Wolf advocates abstaining from porn not on moral grounds, but because "greater supply of the stimulant equals diminished capacity."

E a propósito da palestra acima:

Empathy fuels connection, sympathy drives connection.

Empathy is:
– perspective taking
– staying out of judgement
– recognizing emotion and communicating it

Empathy is 'feeling with people' : —"Oh shit! I hate this!"

In order to connect to you, I have to connect myself to something inside me that knows that feeling.

Empathy is not scripted (... if you say this, do this).

Empathy is about being present with someone. And if you're present and engaged and you take the armour off, you'll know what the person across the room needs.
We all need different things from empathy. There are no hard and fast rules. That is why it is not scripted.

Sympathy is 'feeling for people': —"Oh, you poor thing!"

An overwhelming explosion of adrenaline and emotion

The question we must ask is what it is about this man's construction of his relationship with his partner that permits him to use abusive behaviour towards her when he feels himself to be under pressure. When looked at closely, the ‘excuse' of stress/pressure is either that he perceives her as its cause (partner-blaming) or as the person who should make him feel better (sense of entitlement).
_____________________________

Often the perpetrator will objectify his partner, denying her humanity. This is undoubtedly a central process in domestic violence. He sees his partner as ugly or evil and thinks of her in terms of (often gendered) derogations such as a bitch, slag and cunt. This is part of a process that allows him to use violence by reducing his empathy for his partner. With many perpetrators this objectification constantly pervades their view of their partners.

Loss of partner empathy also occurs when the perpetrator's expectations of services (physical and emotional dependence) and narcissism are such that it becomes increasing difficult for him to see her as having experiences and needs separate from his own. For example, he cannot see that she called the police for her own protection rather than to punish him. If men in the early stages of the DVIP programme are asked to name one quality that their partner or ex-partner has which is not about her relationship to them, most find it difficult to reply.

They struggle to see her beyond her role in relation to themselves and their home, and give responses such as “she stands by me”, “ she puts up with me”, “she keeps the place tidy” and “she's a good mother”.

Denial of the effects on children

Even when a perpetrator has systematically abused his children's mother for many years he may still claim that he is a good father, unable to see the hypocrisy in this statement.

 In 90% of domestic assaults, children are in the same or next room (Hughes, 1992). Furthermore, we know that where domestic violence occurs there is an increased likelihood of child abuse in the same family (and vice versa) (Morley & Mullender, 1994b).

Denial of responsibility

The perpetrator denies control over his actions, placing control elsewhere, external to himself. The ways this is most commonly encountered are as follows.

Partner-blaming

The actions or inactions of the partner or victim are most frequently cited as the cause or provocation of the violence. This is heard in many different ways in perpetrator's accounts of their abusive behaviour: “She pushes me too far”, “She winds me up”, “She knows what I'm like”, “If she didn't do x I wouldn't do y”, “She goes on and on (nagging)”.

Sometimes the violence may be presented as a last-ditch, regrettable step to protect the perpetrator from his partner's verbal or physical assault, but in fact it was either retaliation (punishment, not self-defence) or the silencing of his partner's criticism.

Attributing the reason for abusive behaviour to the woman can become entrenched in domestic violence perpetrators, to the point where remorse and culpability are extinguished. While the perpetrator continues to place responsibility for his behaviour with his partner, motivation to work for change within himself will remain low. Often, partner-blaming is linked to an exaggerated sense of entitlement and anger at her resistance to meeting his demands. He will want to talk about her behaviour and his feelings, and any useful intervention needs to reverse this focus to look his behaviour and her feelings.

Denial of responsibility for consequences for his behaviour

Here the perpetrator blames others when he experiences consequences of his abusive behaviour. This is a variation of partner-blaming that extends to others who challenge his behaviour, including the police, courts, social services and, frequently, his partner's family (for siding against him or never having liked him).

Sense of entitlement (masculinity)

Violence and other abusive behaviours are used to control. Domestic violence perpetrators use abusive behaviour to support their sense of entitlement by:
 — punishing the woman for something she has done wrong (“teaching her a lesson”)
 — forcing her to do something she does not want to do (e.g. “shut up”)
 — stopping her from doing something she wishes to do (e.g. leave the relationship).

 This is establishing the power to set the further rules of the relationship (e.g. he can drink, spend money, come and go as he pleases without criticism). Through this the perpetrator also obtains services from his partner (e.g. sex, housework, emotional care) and restricts her movements and autonomy. These expectations are deeply enmeshed with gender and identity, with what it means to be a man and, in particular, a man in a relationship with a woman.

Despite the fact that the perpetrator knows that his violence is wrong, this sense that entitlement is bound up with received ideas about gender identity allows him to see his behaviour as ‘reasonable’ given his partner's ‘unreasonable’ resistance to his expectations. This further fuels the process of partner-blaming.

A canção que Richards imaginou nessa noite foi "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", uma das canções mais influentes de todos os tempos.

 As the researchers note, these findings are consistent with the idea that more creative people include more events/stimuli in their mental processes than less creative people. But crucially, they found that those scoring high in schizotypy showed a similar pattern of brain activations during creative thinking as the highly creative participants, supporting the idea that overlapping mental processes are implicated in both creativity and psychosis proneness. It seems that the key to creative cognition is opening up the flood gates and letting in as much information as possible. Because you never know: sometimes the most bizarre associations can turn into the most productively creative ideas. Indeed, Shelley Carson and her colleagues found that the most eminent creative achievers among a sample of Harvard undergrads were seven times more likely to have reduced latent inhibition. In other research, they found that students with reduced latent inhibition scored higher in openness to experience, and in my own research I’ve found that reduced latent inhibition is associated with a faith in intuition.

If Homelessness were Genetic

If homelessness were genetic,
Institutes would be constructed
With tall white walls,
And ‘driven’ people (with thick glasses)
Would congregate
In libraries
And mumble.

If homelessness were genetic
Bright young things
Would draft manifestos
‘To crack the problem’,
Girls with braces on their teeth
Would stoop to kiss
Boys with dandruff
At Unit discos
While dancing (slowly)
To ‘Careless Whisper’.

Meanwhile, upstairs, in the offices
Secretaries in long white coats
And horn-rimmed spectacles,
Carrying clipboards,
Would cross their legs
And take dictation:
Miss Brown, a memo please,
To the eminent Professor Levchenko,
Many thanks indeed
For all those sachets you sent to me,
Of homeless toddlers’ teeth.

If homelessness were genetic
Rats from broken homes
Would sleep in cardboard shoeboxes
Evading violent fathers,
Who broke their bones,
While small white mice
With cocaine habits
Would huddle in fear,
Sleeping in doorways,
Receiving calibrated kicks from gangs of passers-by
(A ‘geneenvironment interaction’).

If homelessness were genetic
Then the limping man, with swollen feet,
A fever,
And the voices crying out within his brain
Would not traipse
Between surgery and casualty
Being turned away
For being roofless
Because, of course,
Homelessness would be genetic
And, therefore,
‘Interesting’.

Cool... not cold [nothing extreme]

With a hammer and nails and a fear of failure we are building a shed
Between here and heaven between the wait and the wedding for as long as we both shall be dead to the world beyond the boys and the girls trying to keep us calm
We can practice our lines 'til we're deaf and blind to ourselves to each other where it's
Fall not winter spring not summer cool not cold
And it's warm not hot have you all forgotten that we're getting old

With an arrow and bow and some seeds left to sow we are staking our claim
On ground so fertile we forget who we've hurt along the way and reach out for a strange hand to hold someone strong but not bold enough to tear down the wall
'Cause we're not lost enough to find the stars aren't crossed why align them why fall hard not soft into Fall not winter spring not summer cool not cold

And it's warm not hot have we all forgotten that we're getting old
And it’s fall, not winter, spring, not summer, cool, not cold
And it’s warm, not hot, has everyone forgotten that we’re getting old
And it’s fall, not winter, spring, not summer, cool, not cold

One thing social media is doing and it can be great, and it can be also dangerous, is that it has muted the impact of the established filters as far as what sort of art gets into the public's conscious, and at the end of the day that's really great! I think we are in a slightly awkward period with it, where people are not quite sure what to do with all of the power that used to be distributed amongst these 'figure heads', whether it was whoever the head editor of Rolling Stone was or the record labels that were just deciding what you were going to hear. Now you hear everything. I think we are in a slightly awkward phase where people aren't sure exactly where to find and how hard to work and how to appreciate it...

Restlessness

Jonah Lehrer, in Imagine

"Happiness is not creative"*
