Empathy fuels connection, sympathy drives connection.
Empathy is:
– perspective taking
– staying out of judgement
– recognizing emotion and communicating it
Empathy is 'feeling with people' : —"Oh shit! I hate this!"
In order to connect to you, I have to connect myself to something inside me that knows that feeling.
Empathy is not scripted (... if you say this, do this).
Empathy is about being present with someone. And if you're present and engaged and you take the armour off, you'll know what the person across the room needs.
We all need different things from empathy. There are no hard and fast rules. That is why it is not scripted.
Sympathy is 'feeling for people': —"Oh, you poor thing!"
