"Kant's idea that play is the antithesis of reason, that reason must triumph over imagination and philosophy and science over art, is a continual ghostly presence in Freud. The Kantian hierarchy fit well with Freud's scientific temperament. Science is ideally a discipline of remove, in fact, the scientists are supposed to vanish in the third person objectivity of the observation or experiment. The I/You dialectic may be an object of study, but it's not part of the epistemological drama.
