"We know that self fulfilling prophecies don't work if they don't match
the reality that the rest of us perceive. They are going to be massive
prediction errors that you can't avoid. You can't only define evidence
for your hypothesis and get away with the fact that all the other things
nevertheless exist even if you're not sampling them. Eventually you're
going to bang into them. And how we come to know that the self
fulfilling prophecies are fallacious,
are fantasies, is through affect. The prediction errors will result in
things not actually working. If you remember, all this perception of
reality, all this learning about how reality works is only in the
service of meeting our needs in that reality. If you generate an
inaccurate reality, you're not going to be able to meet your needs in
that reality. So the needs will not be met which will generate the
affects which will make you have to ultimately come up with a better
model, otherwise you will not survive. And Freud spoke there of the
experience of satisfaction. It's why all this cognitive perceptual stuff
has to be grounded in the vital processes of the organism, which we
come to know through affects."
