Sleeping in two shifts
"Intriguingly, right about the time accounts of first sleep and second sleep began to wane, references to insomnia began appearing. Foster isn’t the only one who wonders if this isn’t a biological response to un-segmented sleep. Sleep psychologist Gregg Jacobs tells BBC, ”For most of evolution we slept a certain way. Waking up during the night is part of normal human physiology.” He also notes that the watch was often a time for reflection and meditation that we may miss. "Today we spend less time doing those things," he says. "It's not a coincidence that, in modern life, the number of people who report anxiety, stress, depression, alcoholism and drug abuse has gone up." It may also not a coincidence, though, that we don’t die at 40 anymore."

"For me, the most important thing is the sentences, the style. What does the style do to someone. In other words, if you're a decent writer, anything you say, provided it's done in a certain kind of style, with a particular kind of rhythm and cadence, what you're asking the reader to do is to follow in your footsteps. You're giving them your hand, you're walking them and you say, 'Ok, now we're going to stop because there's a comma here. But don't stop walking. We'll take another few steps further. Now there's a semi-colon. We're going to stop a bit longer and catch your breath', and once you do that to a reader, what you're forcing them to do is to believe everything you say, trust in what you say, and basically, to use a clichet, you're introducing the reader to himself or herself. That's the point of the whole exercise, as far as I'm concerned as a writer. I'll say things about myself and lay myself open to whatever but, in fact, what I'm trying to do is, by doing that, I'm forcing you or, at least, inviting you to open yourself up to what I have to say. And at some point we'll become really like very close friends. And you'll say, 'I've always known this about myself, you're not telling me anything new, but I never quite considered it'.

Nasruddin mounted his donkey from the left, put his right foot in the stirrup, and heaved himself up. Naturally this put him facing backward toward the ass’s rear. As they set off, Nasruddin commented, “Remember, kids: a donkey of your own is better than a shared thoroughbred mare.”
As they walked on, Nuri asked why the Mullah mounted his donkey that way.
Nasruddin said, “Because, my child, the donkey is left-handed.”
Ismail objected, “But Mullah, donkeys don’t have hands.”
Nasruddin replied, “Well, left-footed, then,” then nudged Karakacan with a shout — “Ugh-r-r-r,” which, as you might happen to know, is Turkish for “Giddyap!” — and a shove.
“In any case,” Nasruddin continued speaking to the students, “what usually happens is that I want to go in one direction, and this stubborn beast wants to go in the exact opposite way. So this is our compromise.”"

Um problema
Imaginemos que em Toledo é encontrado um papel com um texto arábico e que paleógrafos o declaram um de punho e letra daquele Cide Hamete Benengeli de quem Cervantes derivou o Dom Quixote. No texto lemos que o herói (que, como se sabe, percorria os caminhos da Espanha, armado de espada e lança, e desafiava qualquer um por qualquer motivo) descobre, no final de um e seus muitos combates, que deu morte a um homem. Neste ponto cessa o fragmento; o problema é adivinhar, ou conjeturar, como reage Dom Quixote. Que eu saiba, há três respostas possíveis. A primeira é de índole negativa; nada especial acontece, porque no mundo alucinatório de Dom Quixote a morte não é menos comum que a magia e ter matado um homem não tem por que abalar quem se bate, ou acredita bater-se, com endríagos e encantadores. A segunda é patética. Dom Quixote jamais conseguiu esquecer que era uma projeção de Alonso Quijano, leitor de histórias fabulosas; ver a morte, compreender que um sonho o levou á culpa de Caim, desperta-o de sua consentida loucura talvez para sempre. A terceira talvez seja a mais verossímil. Morto aquele homem, Dom Quixote não pode admitir que o ato tremendo é obra de um delírio; a realidade do efeito o faz pressupor uma igual realidade da causa e Dom Quixote não sairá nunca de sua loucura. Resta outra conjetura, que é alheia ao orbe espanhol e mesmo ao orbe do Ocidente e requer um âmbito mais antigo, mais complexo mais fatigado. Dom Quixote \u2014 que já não é Dom Quixote, mas um rei dos ciclos do Industão \u2014 intui diante do cadáver do inimigo que matar e gerar são atos divinos ou mágicos que notoriamente transcendem a condição humana. Sabe que o morto é ilusório, como também são a espada sangrenta que lhe pesa na mão e ele mesmo e toda sua vida pretérita e os vastos deuses e o universo.
