Na linguagem do dia-a-dia, há duas condições para utilizar a palavra SABER:
a ausência de dúvida e a veracidade da crença.
Apenas dizemos que uma pessoa SABE alguma coisa SE essa coisa for verdadeira.
A Ciência é conhecimento, e os cientistas têm um forte opinião sobre o que significa SABER.
Não podemos afirmar que sabemos uma coisa sem ter uma evidência objectiva que convença outro cientista.
Isto é o pensamos sobre no que consiste o CONHECIMENTO.
Portanto pensamos saber o que significa SABER.
Mas, de facto, esta definição é contestada.
Outras comunidades têm visões muito diferentes sobre o que significa SABER e o que significa ACREDITAR.
Para os cientistas, ACREDITAR, ao contrário de SABER, não implica VERDADE.
Isto não é certamente verdade para os verdadeiros crentes.
Os verdadeiros crentes acreditam verdadeiramente que aquilo em que acreditam é verdadeiro.
Eles sabem-no. Eles [os que acreditam] têm uma concepção diferente sobre o que é SABER.
E para eles, a garantia da verdade é a revelação e a transmissão fiel [crente]. E do seu ponto de vista a Ciência é apenas mais uma religião.

Então? O apetite já está aguçado para verem o resto da palestra?

Ora aí está! Aquelas que vão sabendo viver junto de uma pessoa sempre muito igual a si mesma e bastante assertiva (sei que esta, última citada, minha característica arrelia e assusta muito boa gente. Paciência). Reconheço que falo um bocado alto, mas ninguém é perfeito. Haverá defeitos piores: a arrogância de espírito, a intolerância, a hipocrisia, a cobardia, o desdém... para citar apenas alguns que me incomodam a mim.

"Sunstein and a collaborator, the jurist Timur Kuran, invented a name for the mechanism through which biases flow into policy: the availability cascade. They comment that in the social context, "all heuristics are equal, but availability is more equal than the others." They have in mind an expanded notion of the heuristic, in which availability provides a heuristic for judgements other than frequency. In particular, the importance of an idea is often judged by the fluency (and emotional charge) with which that idea comes to mind.
An availability cascade is a self-sustaining chain of events, which may start from media reports of a relatively minor event and lead up to public panic and large-scale government action. On some occasions, a media story about a risk catches the attention of a segment of public, which becomes aroused and worried. The emotional reaction becomes a story in itself, prompting additional coverage in  the media, which in turn produces greater concern and involvement.
